Oak framed extension with mezzanine

The owners of this house have added a sizeable oak framed extension with mezzanine that is perfectly in keeping with the existing property.

Project profile

Set in the beautiful Somerset countryside, this oak framed extension has a sizeable lounge with arch brace finish, and a mezzanine level adding additional accommodation for the owners. This extension has been crafted out of green oak and has been traditionally jointed using oak pegs.

About the frame

This oak framed extension with mezzanine has a wonderful arch brace truss frame to give the rooms a wonderful height and feeling of space, as well as a great deal of character. This arch braced truss extension has curved braces at the gable end, two hips, curved wind braces and a most impressive exposed dragon tie which support the hip and the corner of the bedroom. The roof has a complex roof geometry because of the hip and the valley – however this complexity creates an aesthetically pleasing finish. The owners have also left the oak rafters exposed and have oak framed glazing to make this oak framed extension with mezzanine flood with light.

What we really like about this frame is the mezzanine level – it’s totally open so gains the height of the arch brace truss but provides additional, and much needed, floor space. However, what makes this oak framed extension with mezzanine different is the complex roof geometry of the hip and valley – it creates such an impressive finish that both us and the owners are delighted.
