Educational buildings

Carpenter Oak & Woodland has built some of the most successful and beautiful timber-framed educational buildings.

Bespoke, welcoming, places of learning

An oak frame at the core of a purpose-designed educational building creates an environment of character that’s naturally welcoming.

The natural grandeur and warmth of a timber framed building, combined with its remarkable ability to respond to both traditional and contemporary designs, makes it the ideal choice for today’s learning institution. Carpenter Oak & Woodland’s reputation for creating excellent places of learning comes deservedly from our portfolio of successful projects, which includes Broomwood Hall School, Lauder College, Bedales College and Sandroyd School.

All buildings have to be built to a budget, but educational buildings are often on a budget tighter than most – sometimes leading to inhospitable places of concrete and breeze blocks. And yet timber frames can often be as cost-effective, while creating a structure that people enjoy being a part of – something that enhances both the environment and the experience of learning.

As the UK’s leader in bespoke timber frames, we understand more than most the importance of designing a building for a specific purpose. For example, a school of dance has totally different requirements to a college science building. Everything we create is around the specific needs of each client – working with them, their architect and stakeholders – to create buildings which are more successful by design. (A notable project was the ECOSpace workshop at Lauder College in Dunfermline, Scotland, used for teaching timber related crafts and construction skills – a real example of choosing a building material to support the topic which is being taught.)

Green oak frames have a warmth and character which is quite simply unmatched – it is highly durable, proven over hundreds of years in many of the UK’s public buildings. It makes the ideal building material for high-use educational buildings, as it doesn’t get tired with age – but rather improves as it matures. It’s a building material our customers want exposed, so that it can be seen and appreciated.
